Located in southern Crete, the pine- and cypress-filled park is home to over 450 species of plants as well as animals. Samaria Gorge is one of the most spectacular parts of the park and is where the kri-kri, a kind of wild goat and the reason behind the creation of the park, mostly lives. Messolonghi Lagoon

This is a go-to destination for birdwatching anytime of the year. Together with the Aitoliko Lagoon, it forms the Missolonghi-Aitoliko Lagoons complex. Located in the Aetolia-Acarnania are of Western Greece, this place is where you can find different kinds of passerines, terns and egrets – just to name a few. Lake Kerkini

Of the several birdwatching destinations in Greece, this one located in the northern part of the country is an important wetland in the whole of Europe. Around 300 species of bird have been observed nestling and stopping over in this area. Two endangered species, the pelican and the pygmy cormorant, spend some time here. Pindus National Park

The number of brown bears in Europe may be declining, but there are more than 350 of them that live in the Pindus mountain range of this park. Olympus National Park

While Mt Olympus may be the highlight of the park as it’s the home of the gods, the park itself is rich in culture, history and ecological diversity. There are many large species of animals that live in the park including deer, foxes, wild cats and wolves. Alónissos Marine Park

Zákynthos Marine Park

Prespes National Park

Ismarida Lake

The wetland area of the complex that this lake is a part of is home to about 190 species of bird including the oystercatcher, the Kentish plover and the avocet – just to name a few. A number of water species as well as reptiles and mammals live here as well.
