This island is uninhabited, but unlike others, its formation came from volcanic origin. It is located in the Aegean Sea right where the flooded Santorini caldera. Scientists closely monitor the island because it is a protected science site. Makronisos

Its elongated shape spans 13km with arid and rocky terrain. During the Greek civil war until the time when democracy was restored, the location was used as a prison island.
