Kalamiaris Palm Forest, East Coast of Lesbos Island

It originally began with only 24 Canary Island Date Palms planted by an English diplomat. These were brought from Egypt in the 19th century and were later able to produce seeds, giving life to new palms. This forest is at the plateau of the Foloi Mountain, which is unique for the Balkan Peninsula. This type of forest is full of deciduous oaks, forming a dense forest area. This area has been designated a protected area status that is enlisted in the Natura 2000, an ecological network of the European Union.
